Design, Keyboards, Ports and Display

MSI Titan GT77 Design

The MSI TITAN GT77 2023 features a sleek metal finish with a distinctive MSI logo on the top lid, which also includes stylish cuts for added flair. The laptop’s RGB lighting enhances its visual appeal. Despite its sturdy build, there is minimal flex indicating durability and longevity. Interior continues the metal design with a keyboard that shows little flex, reinforcing its robust construction.

Bottom of the laptop is designed for optimal airflow equipped with four fans two small and two largefor effective thermal management. Air exhaust vents are positioned on the left, right and back for efficient heat dissipation. Weighing 3.3 kg (approximately 5 kg with the charger), the laptop is quite heavy but this is due to its powerful hardware, including a 20-core GPU and the robust thermal system needed to support it. The design prioritizes performance and reliability through proper airflow.

MSI TITAN GT77 Keyboard and trackpad

MSI TITAN GT77 2023 features a full-sized keyboard with Cherry MX low-profile mechanical switches, providing a satisfying typing experience. The keyboard’s per-key RGB lighting can be customized through SteelSeries software, allowing users to personalize the keyboard, logo, and air vents with vibrant colors, especially in low-light conditions.

The large smooth trackpad supports multi-gestures and is fully clickable, ensuring a comfortable navigation experience. On the right side, a fast fingerprint sensor provides quick access to the laptop’s functions. Additionally, Face Unlock with Windows Hello offers secure and speedy access as soon as you open the laptop. The SteelSeries software also offers numerous customization options for the RGB lighting, including creating custom effects and assigning colors to different zones and individual keys.

MSI TITAN GT77 2023 Display

The MSI Titan GT77 boasts a flagship-level 17.3-inch 4K UHD display with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and a 16:9 aspect ratio. This mini-LED panel delivers vibrant colors and excellent accuracy, covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, making it ideal for photo and video editing. It features a 144 Hz refresh rate, perfect for gaming, with up to 100 FPS in 4K. The display is bright, reaching 1000 nits, and includes an anti-glare coating for visibility in bright sunlight. The MSI TITAN GT77, a flagship laptop from 2023, offers a range of ports for connectivity. On the left side, you’ll find a power input port resembling a USB port, two USB 3.2 GEN 2 Type-A ports, a full-sized SD card slot, and a headphone/mic jack combo. The right side features an RJ45 LAN port, an HDMI 2.1 port (supporting 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz), a mini DisplayPort, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and another USB 3.2 GEN 2 Type-A port. The Thunderbolt 4 ports support power delivery, charging the laptop at 100W when running or 65W while in sleep mode.

The laptop also includes a MUX switch, accessible through the MSI Center software, allowing users to switch between Discrete, Hybrid, and Integrated graphics modes. Discrete mode is best for performance, while Integrated mode conserves battery by using the integrated GPU. With its HDMI and mini DisplayPort connections, the TITAN GT77 supports up to 4096 resolution and can connect to up to four external displays simultaneously.

Webcam offers a 720P resolution, which feels a bit underwhelming given the laptop’s price 1080P would have been preferable. On the bright side, its light control performs well. This laptop features impressive speakers. It has two 2W down-firing speakers and two top-firing woofers located on either side of the keyboard, delivering excellent sound quality. Powered by Dynaudio, the sound system enhances the overall audio experience.

If you’re considering a laptop for its portability over a PC build, the MSI TITAN GT77 2023 is a top choice.

Gaming Performance

We tested the MSI Titan GT77 2023 with several games at 4K resolution, thanks to its powerful 4090 graphics card.

Valorant: At high settings, it achieved 350-400 FPS while drawing about 80W of power, keeping temperatures below 80°C. The GPU, consuming 160-170W, stayed at 66°C. The fan is loud in cooler boost mode, but the performance is excellent.

Call of Duty 2.0: On extreme settings with no upscaling or DLSS, it delivered 80-90 FPS. Power usage was around 175W with temperatures remaining moderate. With DLSS set to quality, FPS improved to 120-130. Testing on a 1440P external monitor with DLSS quality yielded the same 120-130 FPS, showcasing the laptop’s robust performance. GTA V: On very high settings at 4K resolution, it reached 150-160 FPS with temperatures under 80°C.

Far Cry 6: At 4K and ultra settings with Fidelity FX off, FPS ranged from 80-90. Despite the 16GB graphics card, only 8-8.5 GB of memory was used. Forza Horizon 5: Tested on ultra settings by mistake, it still managed 100+ FPS at 4K resolution. Red Dead Redemption 2: At ultra settings with DLSS off, it achieved 80 FPS, drawing around 175W of power. Graphics card memory usage was 8 GB, and RAM consumption was about 16-17 GB. Spider-Man Miles Morales: With DLSS and ray tracing set to very high, FPS ranged from 80-90 during combat. Even with DLSS and ray tracing off, FPS remained between 70-90.

Battery Life

The MSI Titan GT77 comes with a 99.9Whr battery, the largest allowed for laptops due to flight regulations. Under normal use, like video playback or multitasking, it offers about 4 hours of battery life, which is expected given its powerful CPU with a base TDP of 45W. However, enabling battery saver mode and reducing the number of running applications can extend its battery life, even when using high-performance settings.

Final Thought

The MSI GT TITAN 77 2023, priced at $4,299, features a 13th GEN processor and a 4000 series Nvidia GPU. This laptop is ideal for those who want the performance of a high-end PC but with the added convenience of portability. Unlike a traditional PC setup, you can easily transport this laptop, which includes a 4K 144Hz display, a keyboard, and a mouse. Its efficient thermal system, featuring four fans, extra heat pipes, and a well-designed chamber, helps keep it cool, justifying its premium price.

While it offers impressive specs, it’s important to remember that similar performance can be achieved with a desktop PC. The MSI Titan GT77 is designed for professionals in fields like architecture, 3D modeling, and game development, as well as frequent travelers who need gaming and productivity on the go. The trade-off for this portability is its weight 3.25kg which users must manage.
