Sony is stepping up its game with more frequent updates to keep up with the competition. The Sony WF-1000XM5 (review) has been redesigned for better comfort. Although the case looks similar to last year’s model, it might be slightly smaller. Sony uses recycled materials, but compared to the AirPods Pro 2 case, it’s noticeably thicker, making it more noticeable in your pocket. From the front, they have a similar size, with AirPods being slightly taller, but the Sony case is lighter. Both support wireless charging, but AirPods offer MagSafe and Apple Watch charger compatibility for added flexibility. In terms of price, Sony’s earbuds come in at $300, while the AirPods Pro 2 retail for $250, although you can currently find them for $199 on Amazon.

The Sony WF-1000XM5 comes with built-in foam ear tips, offering various options in the box, similar to the AirPods Pro 2. These foam tips expand quickly and create a great seal. Surprisingly, they’re more comfortable and effective than aftermarket foam tips I’ve used for AirPods Pro in the past. However, in terms of comfort, I still feel the Sony earbuds more than the AirPods Pro 2, mainly due to their weight. The AirPods have a vent that releases pressure, making it feel like you don’t have sealed-in earbuds. So, in terms of comfort, the initial impression suggests that the AirPods Pro 2 might have an edge.
Connectivity and App

Both of these earbuds offer Quick Connect functions, but there are some differences. AirPods seamlessly connect with iPhones, while Sony’s WF-1000XM5 requires an Android device for full functionality, although there is an iOS app available. When you register the WF-1000XM5 earbuds on the app, you gain access to various settings, including customizable EQ presets—an option not available with the AirPods Pro 2.
Touch Controls
![Touch Controls](https://www.clearcrypt.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-AirPods-Pro-2-Touch-Controls-.jpg)
The AirPods Pro 2’s stem controls offer simplicity with easy clicks, double clicks, and press-and-hold actions to switch modes. Plus, the ability to slide up and down for volume adjustment has proven to be handy. In contrast, the Sony WF-1000XM5 relies on taps, including single, double, and even quadruple taps for volume adjustments. This method is considered less convenient compared to the AirPods Pro 2’s controls.
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)
When these comes to active noise cancellation, the AirPods Pro 2 excel in eliminating HVAC noise effectively. With Sony’s WF-1000XM5, I noticed that even with active noise cancellation turned off, most of the noise disappears thanks to the foam tips. When you enable noise cancellation on the Sony earbuds, it takes things up a notch, further reducing most of the sound. However, I do notice more high-frequency air noise from vents with the Sony WF-1000XM5 compared to the AirPods Pro 2.
Sony claims to have made significant improvements in noise cancellation with these new earbuds. In the off-mode, both pass through more noise, but when ANC is on, the AirPods Pro 2 seem to let in a bit more low-end sound while reducing high-frequency noise. If I had to choose, I’d probably lean toward the AirPods Pro 2 as they seem slightly quieter in this regard.
Ambient/Transparency Mode
Next, let’s dive into the ambient or transparency mode, as both of these earbuds offer a feature where they can switch between modes based on your activity. With the Sony WF-1000XM5, it’s pretty cool; it automatically shifts to what Sony calls ambient mode when you start talking and then goes back to the regular mode when you’re done speaking. Apple is planning to add a similar feature soon.
I’m quite impressed with how Sony’s ambient mode sounds. But when we compare it to the king of transparency mode, the AirPods Pro 2, it’s clear that the AirPods have the edge. The AirPods provide an incredibly natural sound, almost like you’re not wearing anything at all. However, I must say that, for the first time ever, the WF-1000XM5’s ambient mode should not be considered a deal breaker because it sounds incredibly good as well.
Audio Quality

The audio quality of the WF-1000XM5 earbuds is rather impressive. They deliver strong bass, with crisp and slightly sharper highs compared to the AirPods. However, the Sony earbuds offer a more natural and less exhausting sound profile. The mids and highs sound smoother, and the bass is also slightly better. You can further fine-tune the EQ and settings to enhance the highs, but overall, if sound quality is a priority, the Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds are an excellent choice.
In terms of microphone quality, the WF-1000XM5 earbuds boast high-quality microphones, as claimed by Sony. On the other hand, the microphone quality of the Apple AirPods Pro 2 is also great and delivers clear audio. In this regard, the AirPods Pro 2 have the edge.
Battery Life
![Battery Life and Case](https://www.clearcrypt.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Sony-WF-1000XM5-vs-AirPods-Pro-2-Battery-Life-and-Case.jpg)
In terms of battery life, the AirPods Pro 2 outperform the WF-1000XM5, offering approximately 30 hours of usage with the case compared to 24 hours for the Sony earbuds. However, the individual earbuds themselves provide longer battery life with the Sony’s rated for eight hours compared to six hours for the AirPods Pro 2. In real-world usage, the Sony earbuds often surpass the eight-hour mark, making them a great choice for those who prioritize battery life. Additionally, the case of the WF-1000XM5 has a distinctive design, featuring a microphone grille and unique color accents, although it may appear larger than the AirPods case, which has a stem but takes up a bit less space.
Which One Should You Buy?
So, after considering all the factors, are the new Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds better than the AirPods Pro 2? Well, it depends on your priorities. The Sony earbuds come with some additional features, including noise upscaling, effective noise isolation with the foam tips, and compatibility with iOS devices for certain features like Siri integration and Find My Phone.
However, the AirPods Pro 2 offer their own advantages. They are more budget-friendly, available for $200 on Amazon compared to the Sony WF-1000XM5’s $300 price tag. If you value iOS-specific features, MagSafe charging, and seamless integration with Apple devices, the AirPods Pro 2 may be the better choice for you.
Ultimately, the decision between the two comes down to your specific needs and preferences. If you prioritize certain iOS features and cost savings, go for the AirPods. If you’re an Android user or value sound quality and longer battery life in the earbuds themselves, the Sony WF-1000XM5 is a strong contender.
